![]() The dualistic conception of nature has been a necessary phase in the evolution of human thought. There is light and shade, there is heat and cold, there is good and evil, there is God and the Devil. THIS WORLD OF OURS is a world of opposites. In his writing, he sought to propose a middle path between metaphysics and materialism, which led to his dismissal by many of the leading philosophers of his time. There, he married engineer Mary Hegeler, with who he would raise seven children at the Hegeler Carus Mansion. ![]() After a stint in the army and as a teacher, Carus left Imperial Germany for the United States, settling in LaSalle, Illinois. Born in Ilsenburg, Germany, he studied at the universities of Strassburg and Tübingen, earning his PhD in 1876. Paul Carus (1852-1919) was a German American author, scholar, and philosopher. ![]()
